Rumor Has It

Published October 4, 2013

ALPENA, MI – Meijer recently got the green light to build a new 192,000 sqft meijerstore near the intersection of M-32 & Bagley Street.  The Alpena area has needed a boost like this for a long time.  Logic would see that other major names in business would now take a closer look at the potential that is ready to be had in Northeast Michigan.

Now factor in the Unmaned Drone Project that could also come in at Phelps Collins Air Force Base further out on M-32 at the Alpena Regional Airport. This project is one that could really bring the needed economic engine to life for Alpena. Alpena could become one of the nation’s leaders in unmanned aircraft testing, development, maintenance and manufacturing. Parcels of property near the airport are said to be in the process of being readied for other business’ that would support this project.

Keeping secrets in a small town like Alpena is no easy task when it comes to potential new business’ coming in.  Speculation and rumor is what keeps residents interested. So here is what is churning in the rumor mill.

Tim HortonsHigh on the list is a new Tim Horton’s Coffee and Doughnuts shop.  Tim Hortons Inc. is a Canadian fast casual restaurant known for its coffee and doughnuts. It is also Canada’s largest fast food service with over 3,000 stores nationwide.

Those doing the talking are saying that they are looking to locate near Meijer and Walmart.

There are two spots that have been mentioned in conversations about a possible new Sam’s Club coming in.  One very possible and logical place for Sam’s to locate would be the R. A. Townsend Company property on Bagley Street.  Since Walmart’s property backs up to the Townsend Property, it wouldSams make sense that Sam’s could set up shop there if R.A. Townsend is willing to sell and move its headquarters.

This part of the Sam’s Club rumor just surfaced this week.  Sources are saying that KMart on US-23 South might be leaving Alpena and Sam’s would then take over that property.  If that scenario plays out, that would give the US-23 South corridor a needed shot in the arm.

Sam’s Club is an American chain of membership-only retail warehouse clubs owned and operated by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., founded in 1983 and named after Walmart founder Sam Walton. As of 2012 Sam’s Club chain serves 47 million U.S and Puerto Rican members and is the 8th largest U.S. retailer

StarbucksNeed another cup of coffee?  Get ready to spend some cash for this jolt.  Whispers in ears are telling that Starbucks might also be eyeing up Alpena.  Starbucks Corporation is an American global coffee company and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington. Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world.  No information has been told of where they are considering locating.

Imagine the Alpena area redefined if all of this comes to be.  It will be very interesting to see what actually comes to reality.
