Chief Craig Hits Political & Personal Land Mine

DETROIT – Chief James Craig seems to have hit his first major political and james craigpersonal land mine.  From his own descriptions during an anti-carjacking program on Monday he described an incident that happened to him on Jefferson Avenue two weeks ago.

Excerpt From The Detroit News: “There are certain cars each suspect tends to (be attracted) to, and I guess they liked my police car — a police car with lights,” Craig said. “And one suspect jumped out and began running toward the passenger side of my vehicle … As soon as I saw the suspect running to my car, I accelerated out of harm’s way.”

The city’s top cop said a man rushed toward his squad car.  No weapon was drawn by the man who rushed towards the squad car.  However, to get himself out of “harms way”, Chief Craig accelerated and drove away.

The response on the article posted by the Detroit News  in Tuesday’s edition garnered over 200 opinions, many not so favorable of the new police chiefs actions.

Carjacking is a major issue in the City of Detroit.  What do you think Chief Craig should have done?
