FLINT, MI – On Saturday September 28th, 2013 Jeffrey Clarence Lee was the victim of a hit and run driver on Dort Hwy near Davison Rd at or about 11:30 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club.  Jeff and his family were at a reception celebrating the joining of two people in marriage.

Crime Stoppers had offered a $2,500 reward for information that could help solve the hit & run murder of Jeffrey Clarence Lee.

For months his family and others pleaded for information from the public to help bring justice for Jeff.  Little did they know that someone within the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office was holding the keys to solving the entire case.

A crime victims advocate for the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office is facing felony charges after State Attorney General Bill Schuette alleges she helped cover up the fatal hit and run.

Three people are being charged in connection to the 2013 death of 34-year-old Jeffrey Lee.

    • Scott Gunn, 26, of Burton, MI faces three felony counts including one count of Fleeing the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death, a 15 year felony; one count of Tampering with Evidence, a 10 year felony; and one count of Conspiracy, a 10 year felony.  He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
    • Sherry Long, 46, of Burton, MI has been charged with two felonies and one misdemeanor, including one count of Tampering with Evidence; one count of Conspiracy; and one count of Interfering in a Police Investigation, a one year misdemeanor. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
    • Leon Gunn, 51, of Flint, MI has also been charged with two felonies including one count of Tampering with Evidence; and one count of Perjury, a 15 year felony.

The State Attorney General’s office alleges that Lee was struck by a black extended-cab Chevrolet Silverado that was registered to Sherry Long. Schuette claims Long’s son, Scott Gunn, was driving the truck and left the scene of the crash without assisting Lee.

State Attorney General Bill Schuette is also alleging that Long and Gunn conspired to cover up the hit and run collision by having the truck repaired in secret. Long also allegedly attempted to sway witnesses from speaking with authorities following the crash.

Leon Gunn, 51, Scott Gunn’s father, also allegedly made false statements to investigators while under oath.

All three are expected to surrender to authorities for arraignment this week.

The Genesee County Prosecutor, David Leyton, requested a special prosecutor from the Attorney General’s office in October 2013 after he became aware that one of his staff members was allegedly involved.  Long has been suspended her job pending the outcome of the investigation, according to Leyton.

Jeff Lee was 34 years old when he died.  He had 3 children who were 14,12, and 8 at the time of his death. They now have to grow up without their Dad.

Even though Jeff and his wife had divorced, he and his ex-wife Bonnie were working their problems out together. The two of them had been back together and living as a family when he was taken away from them.

He was a great dad and his kids loved him very much. He was always a jokester and usually people who met him remembered him well. Most of his life he drove truck. There was nothing he loved more. Near his mothers house they had erected a sign asking all truckers to honk in remembrance of Jeff after his death.

It is with great hope that now Jeffrey Lee can rest in peace a little bit easier and that his family and friends are finally getting the closure that they so deserve.
