Cheboygan County Attempted Child Abduction Rumors Unfounded

CHEBOYGAN, MI – In the age of the internet, information can spread like a wild out of control forest fire.  The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department did an excellent job in putting to bed rumors that an attempted child abduction had occurred in the area.false

On Tuesday, October 21st, 2014 around 6:00pm Cheboygan County Sheriff Department Deputies were dispatched to a home on Owens Road in Grant Township.

The report states that a grandmother noticed a green colored vehicle had stopped in front of her home and a white male was talking with her 6-year-old granddaughter who was out in front of the residence.  When the grandmother confronted the man he left.  The grandmother, feeling that this was very suspicious, contacted authorities.

The sheriff’s department and the Cheboygan Department of Public Safety conducted several interviews with adults and children in and around the city and outlying areas of the county trying to determine exactly what was going on.

They also contacted all police departments in the five most northern counties plus Chippewa and Mackinaw Counties for any other similar incidents and could find none.

Social media started blowing up with false information while the investigation was taking place.  It caused a great deal of concern with parents and school staff in the area.

Sheriff Dale Clarmont stated “Unfortunately facts became distorted about this incident as they were traveling on Facebook and other social media stirring a panic with parents and the schools.

I assure the public this was not an incident associated with someone attempting to abduct any children. We have talked with all involved and also with the schools. The schools followed procedure until the incident was cleared by law enforcement”.

It was finally determined that after an extensive investigation, a resident who was driving in the area with a green vehicle had stopped in front of the home on Owens Road because there were tame ducks from that very residence in the roadway.

It was his concern, along with the two occupants of his vehicle, that the ducks be herded back off of the roadway so they would not become harmed.  He was only trying to do a good deed for helpless animals.
