Four occupants of the vehicle were arrested. Three with outstanding warrants involving crimes of car theft, larceny, and larceny from auto. They were found to have a reciprocating saw with extra batteries and extra blades in their possession.

The arrestees were all from the east side of Detroit. Their behavior, equipment, and past history suggest that they were cruising the neighborhoods looking for catalytic converters to cut off parked vehicles. They had no stolen property in their possession.

The public should be aware that catalytic converter theft is a common crime in Redford and surrounding communities. Crews like the group arrested last night are operating in the area.

Redford Township Police advise residents to take whatever measures are possible to protect your parked vehicles. Lighting systems, driveway alarm systems, and physical barriers like garages and gates all interfere with the completion of this crime.

They are also asking that residents report suspicious vehicles and suspicious persons. The arrestees in this case were driving a Chevy Trailblazer. Larger vehicles such as SUVs and minivans are often encountered in larcenies from auto, due to their interior storage space and passenger capacity.

Anyone with information related to this event is asked to call 313-387-2555 and refer to case 15-7308.
