Romulus Townhouse Fire Kills Child

ROMULUS, MI – One child is dead and another is in critical condition after a fire broke out in the townhome where they were lived in Romulus.

A 1-year-old girl named Malaya Tatnall was killed in the fire.  It is believed that she died due to smoke inhalation. A 3-year-old boy was airlifted to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.  A third child was not in the home at the time that the fire began.

Fire Investigation

The mother has been arrested for child endangerment because she was allegedly not at home when the fire started.  She may face other charges as well. However, she has not been formally charged at this time.

The mother could be arraigned Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, in 34th District Court.

This may not be the first time that the mother had left her children inside of the house by themselves.  She did arrive on scene as firefighters were putting out the flames.  Neighbors were upset and rightfully outraged that a parent would leave such young children home alone.

The fire occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 25th, 2015, at 15057 Mountain Way at the Gateway Townhomes.  Mountain Way is located near the corner of Eureka and Brandt roads.  The family had moved into the complex in July.

The children were located in an upstairs bedroom of the townhouse. The fire started in a room next to where the two children were found.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
