CHEBOYGAN, MI – Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale V. Clarmont stated that his department responded to 14 vehicle accidents and numerous cars in the ditch on Monday, February 29, 2016 due to severe white-out and high wind weather conditions at the time which caused nearly zero visibility and caused the Sheriff Department to close I-75 SB for nearly 2 hours.
“The deputies were dispatched to 2 major multiple car accidents between 11:00am and 3:00Pm on SB I-75 freeway near Riggsville Road,” said Clarmont. “Fortunately no one was seriously injured.”
One of the multiple car accidents involved a semi-truck and 7 cars, while the other accident involved a fire truck from the Inverness Fire Department and 4 vehicles.
The multiple car pileup involving the semi-truck resulted in minor injuries to 2 individuals, the pileup involving the fire truck resulted in injury to 1 individual.
All the injured individuals were transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, Cheboygan Campus by Cheboygan Life Support Systems.
All the individuals involved in the accidents were treated and released from the hospital.
According to Sheriff Clarmont, these kinds of weather conditions require motorists to slow down or get off the freeway until conditions change.
Assisting at the scenes were the Inverness Fire Department, Cheboygan County Life Support and the Michigan State Police.
