Oakland County Patrol Vehicle Damaged during Crash

PONTIAC, MI – An Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy was in the area of Stanley Street and Montcalm Ave on Sunday, June 5th, 2016, at approximately 3:15 a.m.Oakland County Sheriff

He was stopped at a red light and was waiting for the light to turn green, when a dark blue sedan was observed approaching from the opposite direction. The deputy noticed that the sedan was swerving left of center. The vehicle continued traveling toward the deputy’s vehicle until it collided with the patrol vehicle.

The officer was able to notify Central Dispatch and other units in the area of the collision.  The suspects vehicle came to rest a short distance behind the patrol vehicle.

The officer exited his patrol vehicle and began to approach the other vehicle. The driver opened the door and noticed the deputy was approaching him. The driver closed the driver door, placed his vehicle in reverse and quickly fled the scene.

The deputy advised responding units of the vehicle description and last known direction of travel.  He was also able to provide the registration plate information.

Other officers began to check the area and were able to locate the vehicle in the area of Lakeside and Lounsbury.  The vehicle was disabled from the crash.

The driver was apprehended a short distance from the vehicle.  He appeared to be intoxicated and had a laceration to the back of his head.  The suspect admitted being the driver that struck the patrol vehicle and fleeing the scene of the crash.

STAR EMS responded to render medical treatment to the driver.

The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to McLaren Hospital – Oakland for a blood draw and further medical treatment.  The driver was medically cleared and transported to the Oakland County Jail pending the issuance of criminal charges.

The deputy involved in the collision was not injured.

The incident remains under investigation.
