Man Killed in Berrien County Semi Crash

NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, MI – On Friday, June 17th, 2016, Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to an injury accident on US-12 near Yunge Rd in New Buffalo Township. fatal crash 1000

At approximately 3:45 p.m., Bernard Lootens, 89-years-old, of Michigan City, Indiana was in a passenger vehicle pulling onto US-12 from Yunge Rd and was struck by a semi tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on US-12 being driven by Jeremy Hess, 28-years-old, South Beloit, IL.

Mr. Lootens was trapped in his vehicle and was removed with jaws of life equipment from the New Buffalo Township Fire Department.

Mr. Lootens was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, IN. He died several hours after the crash. Mr. Hess was not injured.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this accident. Further investigation will be completed by the Berrien County Accident Investigation Team.

Assisting at the scene were Berrien County Sheriff New Buffalo Twp Patrol, Berrien County Accident Investigation Team, New Buffalo City Police Department, Michiana Police Department, Grand Beach Police Department, New Buffalo Township Fire Department and Medic 1 Ambulance.
