WILMOT TOWNSHIP, MI – Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont stated his department was dispatched to the area of S. Wilson Trail for two lost fishermen on Tuesday, July 5th, 2016, at 1:57pm.
A father and son had parked their vehicle on Fumler Rd around 7:00 a.m. to go fishing and got lost in the woods, having walked about a mile away from their vehicle. “Sometime around 2:00 p.m. they called 911 and the dispatcher was able to provide a latitude and longitude from their cell phone to the search members. The two were located within the hour exhausted and slightly dehydrated but otherwise “ok” said Clarmont.
Vincent Berardi, 54-years-old and his son Vincent Berardi II, 22-years-old, both from Gross Ile, were examined by Cheboygan Life Support and turned over to family members.
The Sheriff recommends anyone walking in the woods to carry a cell phone and once you realize you are lost stop and call 911. “Our dispatch center has the capability, once a signal goes through, at a minimum to give a cell tower location, if the signal is strong enough the 911 computer system will automatically drop a pin on the computer mapping system giving a longitude and a latitude” said Clarmont.
Also assisting in the search was the Michigan DNR and the Michigan State Police.
