ECKFORD TOWNSHIP, MI – On Sunday, July 10, 2016, at approximately 12:30 AM, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a single vehicle accident on 23 Mile Rd, near L Dr South, in Eckford Twp.
The crash was called in by an off-duty Calhoun County Detective that heard the crash in the area and then heard a baby crying off in a wooded area.
Upon arrival, deputies found that the vehicle had been traveling northbound on 23 Mile Rd when it failed to make a left hand curve, traveling off the road into a wooded area. The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 35-year-old man from Sheridan Twp. in Calhoun County, was found dead upon arrival. Deputies then found that the driver’s two-year-old daughter was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, trapped, but still alive.
The two-year-old was extricated from the vehicle by the Homer Fire Department. She was then transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo by the Marshall Ambulance Authority. She is currently listed in stable condition.
Deputies believe that speed may have been a factor in the crash. The Sheriff’s Office would like to commend and thank the off-duty Calhoun County Sheriff’s Detective, whose quick and decisive actions help save the life of the two-year old girl. At this time the accident remains under investigation by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office’s Accident Reconstruction Team.
