DETROIT, MI – The standoff between a distraught gunman and police has ended peacefully. The gunman was taken into custody at 12:41 p.m.
I-94 has reopened to traffic both east and west bound.
Police used a flash bang to take him into custody safely. No one was injured during the lengthy standoff.
The situation unfolded at around 9:00 a.m. on Harper Ave.
At 10:03 a.m. MSP sent out an advisory that I-94 was shut down. Michigan State Police had I-94 shut down east and west bound in the area of Conner and Dickerson. They assisted Detroit Police with the situation while it was in progress.
Police worked to negotiate with the distraught man as he held a gun to his head. He had been threatening suicide. Though not confirmed, sources are saying that the situation began when the man was denied the ability to see his children.
There are currently rumors from those who have been in the area that the man may have killed four people prior to the standoff. Rumor is all that is known at this time. There has been no further word about that information.
Nearby Chandler Park Golf Course was also evacuated due to the situation.
At the end of the standoff, police during negotiations had promised that he would be able to see his children. After the man was taken into custody, police brought his children to see him as a good faith gesture.
