55 yr old Man Killed in Fatal Car-Pedestrian Crash in Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK, MI – On Thursday April 13th, 2017, at approximately 1045 p.m., troopers assigned to the Metro North Post, responded to a fatal pedestrian/car traffic crash on 8 Mile Road in front of the Royal Inn parking lot in the Royal Oak.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 55-year-old man from Royal Oak attempted to cross the westbound lanes of 8 Mile Road from the parking lot of the Royal Inn.  As he was running across the lanes of traffic he was struck by a westbound vehicle in the left center lane knocking him to the ground.  A second vehicle then struck the pedestrian in the same lane of travel.

The man died at the scene.

Both drivers remained on scene after striking the pedestrian and are cooperating with the investigation. The scene of the crash is not well lit and is a common place for pedestrians to cross from the Royal Inn to businesses across Eight Mile near Meyer instead of using the crosswalk.  It is believed that neither driver saw the pedestrian before striking him.

Alcohol is not a factor in the crash.

An autopsy will be conducted today. The pedestrian’s next of kin have been notified. The investigation continues pending those results.
