COLFAX TOWNSHIP, MI – At 2:30 this morning, Friday April 28th, 2017, the Huron County Sheriff’s office responded to a hit and run accident on M-53, west of Thomas Rd. in Colfax Twp., which fatally injured one pedestrian and seriously injured another.
From a witness account and preliminary investigation, it appears that 38 year old Sheila D. Peruski of Bad Axe and 21 year old Cassandra R. Herron of Harbor Beach were walking east in the eastbound lane of M-53, approximately 600’ west of Thomas Road.
According to another pedestrian companion, 41 year old Christopher M. Harder of Elkton, who was walking some distance behind the two, a lighter colored eastbound SUV came up from behind and impacted with both. The vehicle then stopped but continued on to Thomas Rd., then left the area southbound.
Unfortunately Ms. Peruski lost her life to the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms. Herron was taken the Huron Medical Center and later flown out to an out of County hospital with serious injuries.
From statements Mr. Harder made, it’s believed the trio had set out to stargaze from a nearby residence where Ms. Peruski was residing. It’s also believed that alcohol played a role with the three. Due to an outstanding out of County warrant on Mr. Harder, he was then taken into custody and lodged in the Huron County jail.
Accident investigators processed the scene and were assisted by the Huron County Medical Examiners Office. As of press time, an autopsy is being scheduled.
At approximately 06:40, Huron Central Dispatch was advised by a motorist that a SUV was parked on Munford Rd., near M-19 in Bingham Twp., with a sole occupant sitting in the back seat. Deputies responded and determined that SUV was the accident vehicle, as well as the 21 year old male occupant from Bad Axe was the accident driver.
The Mercury Mountaineer SUV was then impounded and the driver was taken to the Huron Medical Center for a requested blood test. He eventually was arrested and lodged in the county jail on felony related charges for leaving that accident scene which caused death. Other charges may be forthcoming as this investigation unfolds.
Agencies assisting: the City of Bad Axe Police, Bad Axe Fire and Central Huron Ambulance Service. The accident roadway was closed over 5 hours and has been since reopened.
