According to investigative reports, at about 5:00AM Tuesday morning, July 11th, police were dispatched to a home on South Cumberland Street near Dort Highway and Longway Boulevard after reports of gunfire were called into 9-1-1. When police arrived on the scene, they found the homeowner, Albert Lee Ballard, 63, with a single gunshot wound to his chest. Ballard’s wife and other family members were also present at the home.
According to the police investigation, the five defendants entered the residence through the front door and three went to the second floor where they confronted Ballard’s wife by pistol whipping her and demanding to know where the money was. At the same time, the other two defendants were confronting Ballard who had been sleeping on a sofa in the living room. Ballard was able to retrieve a pistol he owned and shot one of the defendants who was running down the stairs from the second floor. Ballard then ran upstairs to protect his wife where he struggled with one of the defendants and several rounds of gunfire were shot. Ballard was hit with one of the bullets and was later pronounced dead.
While enroute to the scene, police came upon a two vehicle car crash at Vernon and Court Streets, less than a mile from the reported location of the gunfire. Two passengers in one of the vehicles involved were Carpenter and Pagel. Carpenter was found to have a fresh gunshot wound to his chest and was taken to Hurley Medical Center.
“The facts in this case are everybody’s worst nightmare and something nobody ever wants to face,” Prosecutor Leyton said after announcing the charges. “We should be able feel safe and secure in our own homes without fear of having to confront thugs breaking in to rob us and do us harm,” he said. “We will do all we can to see justice through for Mr. Ballard and his grieving family and for the safety of our community,” he said. “These five individuals and anyone who may be trying to harbor and aid Dre Shavon Jones while he remains at large will be held accountable for their actions,” he said. Prosecutor Leyton also requested that anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Dre Shavon Jones make an anonymous call to Crimestoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL, Michigan State Police Detective Jon Miller at 810-237-6922, Flint Police Department Detective Bureau at 810-237-6900, or go online at P3tips.com.
