Cheboygan County Sheriff reports on High Speed Pursuit

CHEBOYGAN, MI – Sheriff Clarmont stated his deputies attempted to perform a traffic stop on a pickup truck on Wing Rd near old US27 when the driver and lone occupant did not stop.

The incident began at approximately 1:18PM on Monday  July 31st, 2017.

“There was an ongoing major felony investigation involving this individual and we were concluding that investigation with the traffic stop to affect an arrest” said Clarmont.

The driver, a resident of Cheboygan County, a 27-year-old, drove at high rates of speed down Riggsville Rd, through the west end of Cheboygan to Levering Rd into Emmet County, side swiping a personal vehicle before continuing south on US 31 where he subsequently ran off the road into the ditch.

“During the pursuit the driver failed to obey the lights and sirens to stop and he caused a collision at Levering Rd and US 31 striking a personal vehicle that was driving through the intersection. This vehicle then collided with one of the patrol cars, disabling it. Fortunately there were no injuries” said Clarmont.

Sheriff Clarmont stated the driver, after the collision, took off at a high rate of speed south bound into the construction zone of US 31 where he eventually lost control of his vehicle and was apprehended after a short foot pursuit.

The driver has been arrested and lodged and will be arraigned once charges are filed.

The Sheriff stated once charges are filed the driver’s name will be released as well as the charges.

Assisting the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department was the Michigan State Police and the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department.
