Macomb Twp. Man Arrested for Felonious Assault in Huron County

HURON TOWNSHIP, MI – Last night, Friday September 2nd, 2017, shortly after 11:00PM, the Huron County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Kaufmann Rd. cottage in Huron Twp., which was the scene of a felonious assault.

A Huron County Sheriff’s Officer learned that a relative of some of the victims had become disgruntled earlier at the Port Hope Hotel and got into a physical fight with 2 of them. He eventually left and went to his cottage a short distance from the victims cottage and got a 12 gauge shotgun. He then went to the Kaufmann Rd scene where it is believed the suspect was not aware anyone was around. There he shot his shotgun twice in an unknown direction with the blasts being witnessed by two 20 year old men sitting by a camp fire.

The suspect then fired three shotgun blasts into a parked vehicle and decided to leave. When doing so, the relatives in a vehicle occupied by 6 people total was returning, so he rammed their vehicle twice with his and eventually drove around their now disabled vehicle to leave the scene.

The Officer, assisted by the Port Austin Police and the Harbor Beach Police went the suspect’s cottage to confront the 58 year old man. He was eventually taken into custody without incident and lodged in our jail on 6 counts of felonious assault, 2 counts of malicious destruction of property, 1 count of reckless discharge of a firearm and 1 count of being in possession of a firearm while intoxicated. The shotgun and a 40 cal. handgun were found in weeds nearby.

Formal charges will be sought from the Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday and the suspect remains lodged in the Huron County jail on a $50,000 cash bond. The only injuries believed sustained in this incident occurred earlier during the fight at the hotel.
