IONIA, MI – Over the course of several weeks, the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating a series of burglaries occurring in Odessa and Sebewa Townships, east of the Village of Lake Odessa.
Items reported stolen included cash, small electronics, and firearms. On September 6, 2017 the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau received information from the Hastings Police Department and Kent County Sheriff’s Office of a possible suspect being developed for these cases, and to the potential of recovering some of the stolen firearms.
Detectives from the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office collaborated with detectives from the Hastings Police Department and detectives with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office on interviewing the suspect and recovering stolen property from a home in Caledonia, MI. The suspect, an 18-year-old Lake Odessa man, subsequently confessed to committing multiple burglaries, and several firearms and pieces of property were recovered; including a shotgun, two rifles, and three handguns as well as a large amount of ammunition. Also recovered were a GPS unit and some high-end binoculars.
The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office on charges of Home Invasion 1ST Degree, pending review by the Prosecutor’s Office for additional charges including larceny from a building, larceny from an automobile, and possession of a short barreled shotgun. The suspect is not being named at this time, pending arraignment and review for additional charges.
The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens to be vigilant in watching over their property and their neighbors properties, and to report any suspicious individuals or activity in their neighborhoods to police.
