Accident Closes I-696 Freeway in Macomb County [Updated]

WARREN, MI – A very large traffic accident had westbound I-696 at Van Dyke closed down in Macomb County on Monday morning.

On Tuesday September 12th, 2017, at approximately 9:15AM, all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-696 were closed at Van Dyke Road due to a crash involving a jack-knifed semi.

MDOT updated information that Incident: EB I-696 at M-53 (Van Dyke) now has the right two lanes open.

At 11:45AM MDOT states that all EB lanes on I-696 at M-53 (Van Dyke) have reopened. However, drivers should expect long delays in traffic.  Traffic has been backed-up for over 2 1/2 hours and has stretched for several miles.

Michigan State Police and MDOT advise drivers to avoid the area of I-696 and Van Dyke for several more hours while cleanup of this accident continues.

MSP also stated the cause of the large accident was a semi that hit the median barrier. Lanes were blocked in each direction during for clean up. Avoid area as traffic will backed up.
