21 yr old Lake City Man Killed in 2 Car Crash in Kalkaska County

HOUGHTON LAKE, MI – A 21-year-old Lake City man was killed when his vehicle rear-ended a Kalkaska County Road Commission dump truck.

Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post personnel are currently investigating a two car fatal crash. The crash occurred in Kalkaska County’s Bear Lake Township on M-72 near Wish Bone Road at approximately 12:50pm on Tuesday October 17th, 2017.

The driver, identified as Zachary Szabo, 21-years-old, of Lake City was killed when the vehicle he was driving struck the rear end of a Kalkaska County Road Commission dump truck. The Road Commission truck was legally stopped with turn signal activated while waiting to make a left hand turn when the fatal collision occurred.

Zachary Szabo was pronounced dead on scene by responding paramedics.

The driver of the Kalkaska County Road Commission truck received minor injuries and was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for further evaluation. The cause of the traffic crash is still under investigation. Whether or not alcohol was a factor is unknown and will be determined at a later date through toxicology.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the MSP Seventh District Traffic Crash Reconstructionist, MSP Aviation Unit, Kalkaska County Sheriffs Department, Frederic Township Fire/EMS, and the Bear Lake Township Fire department.
