Linden Man Dies after Vehicle hits Tree Head-on in Lapeer County Crash

LAPEER, MI – On Wednesday October 25th, 2017,  at 7:54 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to an injury traffic crash on Hadley Road north of Lippincott Road in Lapeer.

A 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by 76 year Gary Howd from Linden was traveling north on Hadley Road. The GMC Sierra crossed over the centerline and side swiped a southbound 2012 Buick LaCrosse driven by a 42-year-old female from Lapeer.

The Sierra pickup traveled across the roadway and departed the west side. The vehicle continued into a wooded area until it struck a tree head on.

Gary Howd was not wearing a seat belt. A citizen stopped and started lifesaving efforts (CPR) until police and EMS arrived. Lifesaving efforts were continued to McLaren in Lapeer. The death was pronounced within the emergency room shortly after arrival.

The 42-year-old female from Lapeer driving the Buick LaCrosse and her 10-year-old daughter were not injured.

Hadley Road was closed between Genesee and Lippincott Road for approximately three hours for rescue and investigative purposes. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Elba Township Fire Department and Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service.

Alcohol is being investigated as a potential contributing factor. This remains an active investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.
