KALKASKA, MI – A 61-year-old woman from Mio was killed in a fatal car crash early Friday afternoon when she lost control of her SUV on an icy roadway.
Troopers investigated a fatal traffic crash that occurred on December 29th at approximately 12:20 p.m. on US-131 south of Maple Drive in Kalkaska Township of Kalkaska County.
Witnesses confirmed the driver of the vehicle travelling north on US-131 lost control, crossed both travel lanes, left the roadway, became airborne, and struck a large tree. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as a 61 year old, Josephine McLaughlin, of Mio. The lone passenger was ejected from the vehicle and transported to Munson Medical Center for advanced medical care.
The investigation has identified excessive speed for road conditions as a contributing factor to the crash.
Troopers on scene received assistance from the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office, the Kalkaska Department of Public Safety, the Kalkaska Township Fire Department, the Cold Springs/Excelsior Township Fire Department, and Kalkaska EMS.
