HUME TOWNSHIP, MI – Early Saturday evening, March 3rd, 2018, at 5:17pm, Deputies from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single rider ATV accident on Sand Rd. in Hume Twp., about a half mile east of Oak Beach Road.
It appears Curtis D. Thrift, 54-years-old, of Cottrellville, was riding with a friend, who was on another ATV, when Curtis accelerated ahead of his friend on his 2013 Polaris. The friend then found Curtis ejected off of his ATV after he had apparently impacted with a driveway abutment on a curve.
A neighbor in the area heard the accident and rushed to the scene. He and the friend then began life saving efforts. However, they unfortunately were not successful. Curtis Thrift was pronounced dead at the scene.
Among other factors in the accident, Thrift was not wearing a helmet. That is likely to be the most significant factor that contributed to his injuries.
Accident reconstruction Deputies from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office responded and processed the scene. The Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office has also ordered an autopsy for tomorrow.
The investigation into this accident will continue.
Other agencies that responded were the Port Austin Fire Department and Central Huron Ambulance Service units from North Division and Bad Axe.
