Three Killed in Lansing Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-496 [Updated]

LANSING, MI – The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Fatal Accident on westbound I-496 between Waverly and Snow Road at 8:55 PM on Tuesday March 6th, 2018.

Three total cars were involved in the crash resulting resulting in nine people being taken to area hospitals with numerous injuries.

Two passengers were dead upon the arrival of the deputies, with another passenger who died from their injuries at the hospital.

Four other victims were transported to local hospitals with one being in critical condition.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash, but seatbelts were not utilized by all occupants. The accident was not weather related.

The crash occurred after a vehicle was attempting to assist a disabled vehicle on the side of the expressway. The vehicle attempting to assist, pulled back into the lanes of travel (WB I-496) and was struck by oncoming vehicles. Nine people total were transported to local hospitals. One remains in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle struck by the oncoming vehicles suffered only minor injuries. They were treated and released.

The three victims that suffered fatal injuries are as follows:

  • Kelly McNamara, 59-years-old, from Lansing
  • Linda Foote, 66-years-old, from Lansing
  • Kevin Trusty, 57-years-old, from Lansing

The accident remains under investigation by the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit.
