Grandfather Killed on US10 in Midland County

MIDLAND, MI – The Midland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two vehicle, rear end fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of a 66 year old Midland man. The incident took place on eastbound US 10 west of Stark Road in Lincoln Township at approximately 7:25 am on Monday April 23rd, 2018.fatal crash

Our investigation indicates that the driver, Jeffrey Long, age 66 from Midland, was driving his white 2015 Chevy Spark, eastbound on US 10. His vehicle was rear ended by an eastbound red 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was being driven by Bethany Strong, age 25 from Sanford.

Mr. Long was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Long’s three grandchildren ages; 13, 11 and 9 were passengers in his vehicle. They were injured and transported to MidMichigan Medical Center Midland (MMMC). The 11 year old was later airlifted downto U of M Hospital with serious injuries.

Mrs. Strong was also transported to MMMC with minor injuries. Both drivers and passengers appeared to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and air bags deployed in the Jeep.

While there is no evidence to indicate that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in this crash, we are waiting for toxicology reports for a final determination. This report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office for review once it has been completed.

The Midland County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Midland City Police, Midland City Fire, Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police Third District Accident Reconstruction Team, Lincoln Township Fire Rescue, MidMichigan EMS and Chief Medical Examiner J. Daniel Cline.
