22 yr old Killed when Dirt Bike Hits Deer in Sanilac County

SANILAC TOWNSHIP, MI – The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred at approximately 8:35pm on Wednesday May 2, 2018. Sanilac Central Dispatch received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a dirt bike verses deer accident on Ridge Road between Custer and Snover Roads in Sanilac Township.Ben Maxfield

The initial investigation shows that a 2017 Yamaha dirt bike, being driven by 22-year-old Benjamin Maxfield, of Sandusky, was traveling northbound on Ridge Road. The dirt bike collided with a deer that ran onto the roadway, causing him to lose control and lay the dirt bike on its side. The motorcycle slid a distance before coming to a stop and ejecting the driver. Benjamin Maxfield was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation as witnesses are still being contacted. The driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Croswell Police Department, Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit, Sanilac EMS and Port Sanilac Fire/ Rescue.
