DETROIT, MI – Detroit Police Commander Eric Decker provided an update to the shooting that took place in the 11000 block of Sanford. 34-year-old Troy Sanford was shot and killed at about 7:35AM. Two of his children were also injured from the gunfire.
The shooting took place near the Coleman A. Young International Airport on June 13th, 2018. The 34-year-old father was taking his children to school when he was ambushed by two gunman who had been hiding in a vacant house across the street.
The victim was outside of his minivan when he was hit by gunfire from high powered weapons. Commander Decker stated that they had found at least 12 bullet casings.
Troy Sanford’s three children were seated inside of the vehicle. A 10-year-old daughter was shot in the shoulder. A 14-year-old son was hit by bullet fragments in the face. A third child, 12-years-old, was not injured. The children were rushed to Children’s Hospital by their mother in the very minivan that her husband was killed next to and her two children were injured in. Both children are in stable condition.
Those in the area who knew the victim stated that he did not bother anyone and was a nice person. However, it is possible that the suspects were after drugs that the victim may have had and or was possibly selling.
Police are looking for two unknown gunman wearing dark clothing. Their descriptions are very vague. They were last seen headed west on Sanford.
It is still unknown why Troy Sanford was actually targeted.
