OREGON TOWNSHIP, MI – On Wednesday June 13th, 2018, at 5:51 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies and Lapeer City Fire to an injury traffic crash upon Flint River Road south of McKeen Lake Road in Lapeer (Lapeer County’s Oregon Township).
Initial information was that a vehicle struck a tree and erupted into flames prior to anyone exited. Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at 5:56 PM and confirmed that the vehicle was full engulfed. Lapeer City Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire and extricated the occupant.
The driver and only occupant was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initial investigation supports that a Ford passenger vehicle driven by a 19 year old male from Lapeer was traveling south on Flint River Road. The vehicle departed the right (west) side of the roadway and struck a tree head-on.
The Lapeer County Medical Examiner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy which will include positive identification (name withheld until positive identification confirmed).
Preliminary investigation suggest that excessive speed (over the 55 MPH) is potentially a contributing factor. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are involved until toxicology findings are available.
The roadway was closed for a few hours for rescue and investigative purposes. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police and Lapeer City Fire and Rescue.
This traffic fatality remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.
