FLINT, MI – A jury on Monday October 1st, 2018, convicted two men of murder related to a 2016 shooting at a party store in Mt. Morris Township.
Two cousins, Dequavion Harris, 21-years-old, of Mt. Morris and Kemo Parks, Jr., 20-years-old, also of Mt. Morris, were convicted of first degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm related to the October 5, 2016 shooting death of Darnyrequc Jones-Dickerson in the parking lot of the Kingwater Party Store at the corner of West Coldwater Road and Detroit Street in Mt. Morris Township.
According to testimony at trial, Harris and Parks were passengers in a vehicle being driven by a 16-year-old female along with her 14-year-old friend and one other passenger when they pulled into the Kingwater Party Store parking lot. The other passenger exited and went into the store while Harris and Parks whispered in the backseat and then Parks handed over a handgun to Harris and the two exited the vehicle telling the female driver to pull away.
The females decided to turn back into an adjacent parking lot at which point they heard gunshots and saw Harris shooting into a red truck. According to the police investigation, inside the truck was Darnyrequc Jones-Dickerson who was shot five times and died.
Additional evidence at trial included a rap song written by Harris that detailed the shooting and a motive involving the belief that Jones-Dickerson was involved in the killing of Harris’ cousin.
“The community is safer with these two individuals off the streets,” said Prosecutor David Leyton after the verdict. “They were suspects in previous crimes as well and now they will face a life behind bars for their actions,” he said.
Sentencing of the pair is scheduled for October 29th in the courtroom of Circuit Court Judge Celeste Bell.
