Monroe County Sheriff Warning of Sex Offender Registry Phone Scam

MONROE, MI – Residents in Monroe County and beyond are being warned of a recent telephone scam involving the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry program. Scam Alert

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous complaints of residents receiving phone calls from persons portraying themselves as detectives or sergeants with the “Monroe County Sheriff’s Office”. The purpose, regardless of the story behind the call, is to elicit citizens to provide money, either over the phone via credit card, or by mailing checks or gift cards to an address outside of Monroe County. The callers can be very persistent and often
use the threat of arrest and long prison terms to entice compliance.

Sheriff Malone reminds residents that no law enforcement agency will call citizens and demand money or face arrest for any reason. Should a Monroe County resident encounter this situation, it is requested they call Monroe County Central Dispatch at 734-243-7070 and report the crime.
