Serial Armed Robber Arrested In Pontiac And Waterford Incidents

PONTIAC, MI – The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Waterford Township Police Department have arrested a suspect in a series of armed robberies which have occurred over the last few weeks.Richard Jefferson

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office Pontiac Substation and Waterford Township Police Department developed a potential suspect who was believed to have committed this string of armed robberies. The suspect was located at an address in the City of Flint and subsequently taken into custody by Flint PD at the request of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Once the suspect was transferred into the custody of the OCSO, he was interviewed by Detectives and ultimately confessed to the four recent robberies.

Richard Allen Jefferson, a 50 year old resident of the City of Pontiac, has been arrested and is lodged at the Oakland County Jail where he is waiting arraignment in 50th District Court. He has confessed to the following armed robberies:

• December 23, 2018 – Rite Aid – 1100 Block of Baldwin Road, Pontiac – $900 Taken
• January 7, 2019 – Thrifty Florist – 200 Block of South Telegraph, Pontiac – $150 Taken
• January 7, 2019 – 7-Eleven – 1100 Block of Baldwin Road, Pontiac – ~$200-$300 Taken
• January 14, 2019 – TCF Bank – 2100 Block of Dixie Highway – $1400 Taken

Jefferson has an extensive criminal background including, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Retail Fraud, Robbery, and four different convictions of Unarmed Robbery in various jurisdictions in Oakland County, including a 2008 armed robbery of the same Thrifty Florist on the 200 Block of South Telegraph in Pontiac.

“I am pleased with the police work done and am grateful for the partnership with Waterford Twp. PD, who assisted in bringing justice for the victims of these armed robberies,” said Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard. “This career criminal is now behind bars without further harm to our community.”

“Thankfully, we were able to apprehend this suspect before further crimes were committed,” said Waterford Twp. Chief Scott Underwood. “This incident demonstrates the need for collaboration between our local agencies to take violent criminals off of the streets.”

Jefferson is charged with three counts of Armed Robbery where each charge carries a life felony.

The Suspect, Richard Allen Jefferson, was arraigned today in the 50th District Court in the City of Pontiac before the Honorable Judge Rhonda Gross. Jefferson was given a $75,000 cash surety bond. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for January 29th, 2019.

Jefferson was also arraigned in the 51st District Court in Waterford Twp. on bank robbery charges and given a $250,000 cash bond, no 10% surety.
