1 Dead in Barricaded Gunman Incident in Mason County

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP, MI – At 6:54AM on Tuesday April 16th, 2019, Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office units were notified of an active shooting that was taking place at a residence in the 10000 of N. US-31 in Free Soil Township.Police Line

Four MCSO deputies responded immediately and with information provided, relating to additional persons being in the house and two persons being shot, SWAT was activated and assistance was requested from MSP and Manistee County SO.

The caller, one of the shooting victims, was able to provide responding law enforcement valuable information as it related to the name of the shooter, his location in the house, and that there were small children also in the home.

Law Enforcement was able to quickly establish a perimeter around the house and evacuate one wounded adult and two children. The wounded adult was able to provide officers with additional information as it related to firearms and that one additional victim was reportedly deceased inside. The wounded also advised the alleged shooter was barricaded in a room.

At 8:25 AM an adult male advised officers outside that he was coming out to give up, he was taken into custody without incident by deputies. Deputies and MSP Troopers conducted a check of the residence and did find an adult male dead from gun shot wounds.

Mecosta County Sheriff Kim Cole thanked Sheriff John O’Hagan with the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, his command staff and deputies who also responded to the scene along with members of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indian Tribal Police and US Forest Service Law Enforcement. “The quick response from these agencies allowed us to get a quick perimeter set up on the house, which allowed us to quickly evacuate those in the home.”

Detectives with the Mason County SO, Oceana County SO and MSP Hart Post are still actively investigating this matter and the Michigan State Police Crime Lab out of Grayling is currently responding to the scene.

The adult shooting victim who survived was transported by Life EMS to Munson Hospital in Manistee, is currently be treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries. Manistee County Sheriff’s Office Victim’s Services is at the hospital with the victim assisting as needed.
