MOUNT CLEMENS, MI – Multiple Counts of Malicious Destruction of Personal Property have been brought on a 72 year old man for severely scratching cars at the Clinton Township Library.
On two separate cases, Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Smith authorized the suspect be charged with Malicious Destruction of Property over $1,000, but less than $20,000.
Police and prosecutors allege that on multiple occasions between March 22 and May 13, 2019, the Suspect, Gary Young, would park near a vehicle in the Clinton Township Library parking lot. Young would get out of his vehicle, act in a suspicious manner and then get back into his vehicle and drive off. Unfortunately for the library patrons, Suspect Young’s suspicious behavior was him destroying their property and leaving a trail of expensive damage.
“This behavior is very troubling,” said Prosecutor Smith. “Libraries, schools, parks are all community environments we want our citizens to visit and feel safe doing so. You would never think, while checking out a book, a senior citizen, with no apparent motive, is maliciously damaging your vehicle in the parking lot.”
Prosecutor Smith continued, “We have charged Defendant with two separate incidents as of today and, based on library surveillance, we know there are more victims. We encourage the public to come forward if they noticed similar scratches to their vehicle after visiting the Clinton Library over the past few months. Mr. Young will be held accountable for this malicious behavior.”
The Suspect was arraigned in 41-B District Court – Clinton Township earlier today. Young was given a $5,000, 10 % bond by Court Administrator McGrail.
