Parole Absconder Flees MSP from Belle Isle then Hits Light Pole

DETROIT, MI – On Friday July 19th, 2019, at approximately 6:50 PM, troopers on Belle Isle checked the registration plate on a Dodge Challenger. The registered owner came back as a parole absconder for Carjacking and Robbery. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle.

The vehicle stopped and the trooper waited for back up. As the DNR unit arrived the driver in the Dodge fled the scene. The trooper activated his siren and pursued the vehicle as it went onto Jefferson Avenue from the MacArthur bridge.

The trooper then terminated himself from a pursuit per departmental pursuit policy and shut down his lights and sirens and continued driving normally. The driver of the Dodge continued on Jefferson towards Van Dyke.

As the trooper continued down Jefferson, he observed the suspect vehicle on Van Dyke just north of Jefferson. The vehicle had crashed into an electric pole and was facing the wrong way.

The trooper located the 19 year old male driver from Detroit walking away from the vehicle and placed him under arrest for his warrant violation and fleeing police. The driver will be lodged at the Detroit Detention Center.

The passenger had minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The investigation is pending prosecutor review and MDOC review.
