At approximately 2:38AM, Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 700 block of Melrose Street on the report of a subject lying in the middle of the road. Upon their arrival, deputies found a man, now identified as Demarco Kinel, 34-year-olds, of Pontiac lying in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue, north of Melrose. Kinel had suffered an obvious gunshot wound to his head. The victim was not breathing.
Paramedics from the Waterford Regional Fire Department and from Star EMS arrived to provide medical care. Paramedics were unable to revive the victim. Paramedics provided telemetry to McLaren-Oakland Hospital where a physician pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Deputies located the victim’s girlfriend who had called 9-1-1. She and a friend could not find him at his residence and went looking for him. They found him lying in the street and called 9-1-1 for help.
Deputies established a perimeter and requested a Detective. Detectives and the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office were notified and responded to the scene. A single spent shell casing from a firearm was found lying near the victim. The OCSO Forensic Science Laboratory was requested and responded to process the scene. Deputies canvassed the area for perspective witnesses and possible surveillance video.
Detectives are continued with the investigation and determined that Jevon Hairston, 27-years-old, of Pontiac, allegedly shot and killed Demarco Kinel. Jevon Hariston has been charged with:
- Count 1 Homicide-Open Murder-Life Felony
- Count 2 Possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony- 2-year felony
- Count 3 Weapons-Firearms-Possession by a felon- 5-year felony
- Count 4 Possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony- 2-year felony
Jevon Hairston has previous convictions for:
- 2013-Breaking and entering vehicle
- 2016- Carrying a concealed weapon
Jevon Hairston was arraigned on 7/23/2019 at the 50th District Court in front of the Honorable Judge Michael Martinez. Bond was denied. A probable cause conference has been scheduled for 8/1/19
