LUDINGTON, MI – On Thursday, August 1st, 2019, at 12:40PM, emergency crews responded to a semi-truck vs. tri-cycle peddle bike crash on US10 just west of Dennis Road in Mason County’s Amber Township.
Mason County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on scene and found the cyclist, an 81-year-old Scottville man, dead from head trauma.
The preliminary findings indicate the cyclist was riding a three-wheeled bike westbound on US10 on the paved shoulder, off the traveled portion of the road, when he attempted to drive over a curb cut to a business parking lot. When doing so, he tipped the three-wheeled bike over and fell under the trailer tires of a passing westbound semi-truck. The truck driver, a 51 year-old male from Lowell MI, was slowing to make a right turn into a business next door to the crash scene. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
The case remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to have played a role in the crash.
Scottville Fire, Pere Marquette Township Fire, Life EMS and the WMED Medical Examiner’s Office all responded to the scene.
US10 between Brye Road and Dennis Road was closed from the time of the crash until 3:00 PM while traffic crash investigators worked the scene.
