A  deputy from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, who is assigned to the City of Pontiac’s Youth Recreation Center, was monitoring a youth basketball game when several subjects became agitated and appeared to be on the brink of a physical altercation. The Deputy escorted one of the teenagers to the office where he dropped a backpack he had been carrying. A staff member picked up the backpack and advised the Deputy that there was a pistol inside. The Deputy found a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

The 16-year-old’s mother arrived and was advised of the situation. The boy stated that he had taken the pistol from his friends’ mother because he thought there was going to be trouble with other kids at the recreation center. The on-call referee from Children’s Village was contacted and authorized that he be lodged at Children’s Village pending arraignment.

The pistol was tagged and placed into the property room.

The other subjects who were involved in the altercation fled the area and the planned activities continued uninterrupted.
