MACKINAW CITY, MI – Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont stated his department was dispatched to a home invasion in progress at the Mackinaw City Campground on August 17th, 2019 at 3:53am.
It was reported a man was attempting to gain entry into an occupied camper. “The suspect knocked on the door of the camper, waking up a husband and wife. The husband opened the door to see who was knocking and at that moment the suspect grabbed the door and attempted to gain entry, scaring the elderly couple” said Clarmont.
Sheriff Clarmont also stated the husband was eventually able to get the door closed while fighting with the suspect. The victim cut his hand in the process. The suspect also went around the camper causing damage. Mackinaw City Police arrived on scene and apprehended the suspect identified as Dylan Shampine, 21-years-old, from Cheboygan.
“It was evident to officers on scene that Shampine was intoxicated and upon questioning him, he did not know where he was” said Clarmont. Cheboygan Life Support was dispatched to the campground due to the husband was having breathing issues because of the event and to tend to the laceration on his hand.
“Thankfully the suspect was able to be apprehended quickly by the Mackinaw City Police officer” said Clarmont. “These two victims were truly shaken up and were very afraid of what might have happen had Shampine gained entry.”
Shampine was arraigned; bond was $10,000 cash or surety. Shampine’s next court date is August 26, 2019.
