The fatal crash occurred at the corner of M-72 and US-31 in Acme Township.
The 87-year-old woman, from Williamsburg, who was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling southbound on US-31, turned east into the path of a northbound commercial semi-truck driven by a 63-year-old man from Grayling.
A 71-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Mailibu, also from Williamsburg, was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was also transported to Munson Medical Center and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
Troopers were assisted on scene by the Michigan State Police (MSP) 7th District Traffic Crash Reconstructionist and MSP Motor Carrier Officers. Additional assistance was provided by North Flight EMS and the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department.
