Upon arrival, the investigation showed a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado was parked off the roadway and the operator was out assisting people in another vehicle that had went off the roadway due to icy conditions.
“A vehicle traveling N/B lost control and impacted the Silverado that was parked” said Clarmont. Michael Trafton, 62-years-old, was traveling northbound on I-75 with his wife, Laurie Trafton, 59-years-old, from Lake Orion. They were in a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu when Michael Trafton lost control on the icy slippery roadway.
“Unfortunately Mr. Trafton died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident and his wife remains in critical condition at McLaren Petoskey” said Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont.
A female passenger who remained in the parked Silverado received minor injuries due to the impact of Mr. Trafton’s vehicle.
“At this time road conditions and speed are the likely factors in this accident” said Clarmont.
The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team, Cheboygan Life Support Systems, Tuscarora Township Police Department, Tuscarora Township Fire Department and the Michigan State Police.
The accident remains under investigation.
